Van Marwijk was already under mounting pressure having seen his squad implode in Poland and Ukraine, losing all three group games.
But his position became untenable after the leak of his report — which called on the Dutch FA to boot out key players because they were a bad influence on the other players.
Among those ‘bad apples’ were Rafa van der Vaart, Dirk Kuyt, Johnny Heitinga and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
A huge public backlash followed and, after careful consideration, Van Marwijk decided he had no choice but to call it a day.
Van Marwijk, who signed a new four-year contract prior to the tournament, led the Dutch to the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa, where they lost narrowly 1-0 to Spain.
But their players went to war with each other at Euro 2012 and Van Marwijk failed to bring them under control.
He was accused of favouritism towards his son-in-law and captain Mark van Bommel, while several players claimed he had completely lost the dressing room.
Dutch football federation president Bert van Oostveen had said: “I am very disappointed. This is unworthy of a Dutch team.
“I accept that Bert van Marwijk took us to the World Cup final two years earlier but this tournament was unacceptable.
“That is why we are going to have a thorough evaluation very quickly.”
